My last stop in Chinatown is the Shanghai Fried Siopao. Everytime I'm in Binondo, I'll always make sure not to forget to buy these yummy buns. Affordable and delicious. For Php20.00 only per siopao.

Shanghai Fried Siopao is located at Sabino Padilla St., Binondo, Manila (very near after you crossed the Estero coming from Binondo Church)

Perks when your company driver is limited--you get to enjoy the field and the food around it. Today's travel destination: T Alonzo--where a lot of industrial items are found (pipes, welding materials,..) but just around there are really good food places.

Away from the elegant dining experience, lets take some "street food" here at ongpin. The Shanghai Fried Siopao!

Actually it took me a click at looloo explore tab to discover what good food is available here. The food store sells fried siopao, egg noodles, hopia, peanut bars, kikiam, ma chang etc!

Ok, so we call this toasted siopao here-- in chinese terms quan bao. This is not new to me, now i know where to find the best. As compared to the quan bao that we can buy at mayon area, this quan bao is moist and toasted at the bottom. It's not as fluffed as a siopao is, rather the bao is thin and, yes, a little airy. What's inside is really different from what we can buy in qc. It's a very moist and tasty meatball.

The place got no seats or aircon or CR--its more like a store nga lang. And this is where you can find good tasting toasted siopao. Plus it's really cheap. 18pesos per piece. 9728128538

After Sincerity and Ang Tunay food appreciation day. Hahaha! Went to this place to buy some siopao for take home. We like them fried siopao so i decided to buy some to be eaten for breakfast or dinner.

Quite a long walk along Ongpin. If you're coming from Binondo Church side of the street, you'll have to walk around 15-20 minutes depending on how long-legged or brisk walker you are. I think you'll have to cross two bridges where you'll have to cover your nose to get there. Some landmarks perhaps is a Korean supermart on your left and some feng shui specialty stores on your right. If you see these two, you're a few steps from the store.

They sell more items now like siomai, dumplings, machang, kikiam, some ready-cooked food items like shanghai, and other dishes all for take out. Place is really small, they can't afford to put tables and chairs for you to dine.

I only buy the fried siopaos that cost a little less than 20php now. Still good but not as good as before. I think the fillings are less now but still enough. It's just that it was overflowing before. Haha! I'm the type who'll walk the streets of Ongpin munching on these siopao. I don't really mind. Haha they're best eaten when still hot, I swear! Quality is really different when you just warm it at home!

Second Stop!

This was what I'm excited about. When we reached the place I realized hindi pala to yung pinuntahan ko last year. Hahaha! Kainis! The taste is similar tho. Very close if I may add. Each costs 17 pesos a piece now.

I was in Manila the other day so I decided to drop by Ongpin to get some grub. Shanghai Fried Siopao came on top of my mind since I've been craving for their siopao like forever hahaha. If only I live near Ongpin (sigh)... Anyway, their fried siopaos are now Php 18 apiece. Size is still the same and the siopaos are still generously filled with their special mix of pork and leeks. Other than the price, nothing's changed. They still have the best siopao for me!

We were in Binondo last Monday since hubby needed to get something done. I tagged along with my own agenda in mind --- BINONDO FOOD CRAWL 128518

So I got my |ooloo guide ready and headed to my first stop - Shanghai Fried Siopao. Don't get confused. These babies are totally different from their cousin Toasted Siopao that have gained popularity and can now be bought almost anywhere. Fried Siopao are not what you think they are. They're not "fried" as we know what fried literally means. Only the bottom is fried or should I say toasted. But don't under estimate these buns coz they sell like hot cakes and line can get really long!

For 18Php, you'll get a warm siopao with toasted bottom. The bun itself was so soft and the bola-bola filling was so good! It was as if pork dumpling without the wrapper was tucked inside the white bun! Sarap tlga! I swear! 128514 Winner for the price since the filling was generous. Plus no need for siopao sauce! It's that good! Hubby and I were able to inhale 2 each in no time so I needed to get out of the car again and buy some more!

Now I'm wondering if they have this in Asaso flavor? I wasn't able to ask.

So it's true when they say - "don't judge a book by it's cover" 128514 I mean, the store, men, really looks dirty! Gah! Masarap pa din siopao nila 128518

This was the first stop of our chinese new year walking tour. Shanghai's fried siopao for only 18 pesos! Well technically i dont think it was really fried. Just a few seconds lang cause the rest of it was soft only the bottom was fried. It had delicious veggies inside and it was so good. Sinabayan pa ng 10 pesos na coke sa kanto! Yum

8/10: A bit different compared to the usual Siopao in the market. The Fried Siopao. Who would have thought that this thing ever existed? I've tried Toasted Siopao way back and all along they are just the same, but it's completely different! 128517

• PLACE
- Shanghai Fried Siopao is one of the many siopao stand you can see in Binondo. But one factor that Shanghai Fried Siopao differs from another is the location since it's just along the road of Binondo and easy to see.

They have a huge pan where they will fry their siopao. I thought they will fry the siopao ala
fried chicken style where they will submerge the siopao in oil. But it's just basically frying the bottom part of the siopao. I was kinda disappointed at first for some reason. I felt that it's just an ordinary siopao with crispy part. 128542

• FOOD and PRICE
But when I tasted the Fried Siopao, it proved me wrong! It was indeed delicious. Yes, let's get it straight that it may be like the usual siopao, but the filling inside the siopao was really meaty and full of flavors! Not to mention that every bite has this generous flavorful filling! For just 18 pesos each, this is really a good deal! It's way better than the commercialize siopaos out there! Pwede na! 128523128079

Went all the way to Binondo just to try the famous Shanghai Fried Siopao.

But maybe I was expecting too much.

It's just like your typical siopao. Flavorful but not worth the travel. 128514

For 18 pesos each, I think it's kind of overpriced and definitely overrated/overhyped.

I still prefer Visayas Ave's Toasted Siopao. 128076 8 pesos lang 128516128077

1st stop of our Binondo food Trip. Shanghai Fried Siopao. A bit different with the usual siopao and different with Bicol's toasted siopao, i got used to eating. Shanghai's fried siopao's is very moist and rich in flavor and tastes well. you dont have to use any sauce to enjoy its taste. a must try in Binondo.

I love finding great food in the most unassuming of places. When I find a really good hole-in-the-wall, it's like I already won something and I always keep a mental note of those special places... Sort of like my mental treasure box. 128522

I don't like siopao. Never liked it ever since... When I was a kid, it was one of my dad's staple pasalubongs for me and my sister and the only thing I ate was the thin glossy dough skin of the siopao bread... I know, I'm weird. 128541 When I grew up, I discovered Chowking's mantao so that was what I usually ordered when I had their beef mami... Then they totally erased it from their menu like i was the only customer of that 128533

Recently, I discovered Suzhou's famous siopao and I liked it just because of the filling that's easily distinguishable so I'm confident of what I'm eating (hmmmmm... Something tells me my dislike for siopao stems from the 128049 myth), although I liked it, it wasn't something i'd go out on a limb for just to have it...

... Until I discovered this in one of the streets of Binondo. I saw it the first time last CNY and i got really intrigued because of the suuuppperrrr long queue in this quaint store with seemingly busy staff continually cooking something. I read the signage and made a mental note to come back and try it. When I went back after 2 months, it still had a crowd but not like last CNY. I ordered one fried siopao and as soon as I took one bite, with my mouth still full, i asked for another one! It was that good! The bread was so soft and steamy, it was also moist, the crusty bottom had a slight crunch because of the frying and made the bread all the more delicious 128077and the filling, it looked like a bola-bola mixture of fresh meat and herbs. I could totally see the chives and pepper and the meat was so juicy and tasty I finished off the medium-sized siopao in 3 bites, i didn't even have to put sauce for it to taste better! 128055128061128513

One siopao costs only Php17, for me that's super cheap for the quality of the food. 128077128076 Food wastage seems like it's not a problem because as soon as they finish cooking the siopao, it's also easily wiped out by customers 128077

The guys making it are pretty friendly and answered all my queries and even posed for me but the owner, a full-blooded chinese, was pretty "masunget" 128529 He said pictures are not allowed, which I really couldn't understand because it's actually a way for them to have more customers. Oh well, I left with a huge smile on my face anyway, and his staff were pretty apologetic to me.

This is probably the only siopao I'd always crave for. And I am craving now. 128540

Grab as much fried siopao from this hole in the wall! Shanghai Fried Siopao may look very modest but they sell the best tasting siopao I have ever eaten! For only Php 17 apiece, you get a decent-sized siopao with a crusted bottom. You might get disappointed at first since it doesn't look like it was fried, but as soon as you take a bite, you'll ask for more! With its authentic Chinese taste, the fried siopao is incomparable to the Asado/Bola-Bola siopaos that most of us are used to. It's really meaty and savory - really worth the price! Just a tip, eat the siopao right away! It's best eaten warm.
