Our Chinatown Food Tour's 5th and final stop was at Shi Lin. It was almost closing time when we got there but the servers were still very accommodating.

We were already full by this time so we just ordered a couple of items:
🔹 Crispy Prawn Cake. An appetizer/snack that I could seriously munch on all day er'day. Seriously. It is so crispy and tasty too.

🔹 Choco Nutella Dumpling. Are you one of those people who can snack on Nutella straight from the bottle? I'm not. I don't even like it that much. But this dumpling just caused a change of heart. I loved it!

Last Stop of our Binondo/Chinatown Food Crawl (5th restaurant in 5 hours). Shi Lin is my alone-time-go-to-comfort-food-place because of their Xiao Long Baos (traditional ones) and the Noodles in Peanut Sauce. However, since this is already the last stop, I was already full and guilty of everything I've eaten so far. So I had to skip my regular orders for this Shi Lin visit.

Ruth D and Lark C ordered "light meals" just to end the night. They went for the Nutella Xiao Long Bao and the Crispy Prawn Cake to cap off our food crawl.

The Nutella Xiao Long Bao was good although it was a bit sweet for my taste since I am not use to eating a chunk of Nutella in a xiao long bao wrapper. I usually eat it with bread although I think it would be heaven for Nutella lovers out there.

The Crispy Prawn cakes are thin and just light and would be good if you are looking for a starting meal (ending for us). Although it is fried, it is not that oily. On my next visit, will definitely try this again along with my regulars.

Thanks Ruth D and Lark C for sharing your orders - choco nutella dumpling and crispy prawn pancake.

The dumpling was served warm. The wrapper of the dumpling does not easily tear and the choco nutella inside was also soft and melts in your mouth. It was very rich in taste.

Bonus: we saw how the choco nutella was being wrapped and prepared through their glass kitchen window.

The pancake was also delicious. I enjoyed dipping it with the sauce served with it. It was thin, easy to chew and not oily.

Our 4th and last stop for our Binondo Foodtrip.

Thanks Ruth D and Lark C for inviting me, Chachi L and Teemee T. We had fun!

Whenever I go to Lucky Chinatown, I always passed by this resto. Out of curiousity I tried it last Sunday. Ordered Xiao Long Bao, Braised Beef Noodles and Red Bean Buns. Xiao Long Bao was ok. Nothing spectacular. The braised beef noodles was a big disappointment. Noodles were overcooked. One big chunk of beef and a big keafy vegetable not sure if it's bokchoy. Soup was tasteless. Red bean buns were ok. Place was not that inviting. Dim lights, place was not that clean.

Ako na ang pinaka-demanding na driver!128513

Saw the chance for another Shi Lin visit when I drove my mom to Divisoria!128522 Wish granted! Three of us had a very late lunch here the other day, a much needed break from shopping...128516

I did all the ordering, perks of being the driver... Yey! Got the XLB, forever staple in Shi Lin- both original and black truffle variants; the pork chop with fried rice and the bok choy...

Among the two XLB flavors, all of us preferred the original... The black truffle was a good pairing but it's so flavorful on its own that the truffle flavor kind of detracts from the taste... Plus it's more expensive, so there...128513 Their pork chop with fried rice was likewise good! And the bok choy was one of those dishes that seem simple enough, but difficult to execute... I can never get it right myself, feeling chef lang...128527 very subtle flavor!

Service was fast and efficient... Plus they reminded us that if we use BPI, we get an order of pork asado for free if our bill reaches P500... I love credit card promos! I keep forgetting to ask for the promos, but it's such a treat!128522 so binanatan ko na pauwi... 128513

It kinda looks weird in the pic, but it's was good...128522

Ordered Xiao Long Bao, Drunken Chicken, Taro Dumpling, Wanton Noodles (?), and Almond Jelly with Lychee. Loved everything except the drunken chicken which I think tasted weird and not in a good way. Highlights for me were the taro dumplings and the noodles. Prices were just right though leaning on the expensive side considering the not-so-big servings.

Okay that's it, I'm clearing my looloo backlog with one review at a time.

I celebrated Chinese New Year last January with Regine Ann M (she also took the photo in this review) in no other than one of the biggest Chinese communities in the Metro, Binondo! This place is a beautiful tavern of Chinese delicacies and culture.

Xiao Long Bao (4/5)

A staple order here in Shi Lin, and probably the dish that made this place famous. It's served in 6 or 10 pieces, and you could observe that each table has one! No kidding.

If you're eating it for the first time here, don't fret. They'll give you a laminated piece of paper with everything you need to know about Xiao Long Bao. The instructions on how to eat it and which sauces to mix to complement your taste is indicated. Just takes a minute to read and you're good enough to experience your first Xiao Long Bao like a pro.

Moving on to the taste, it's really savory and has a play of textures inside your mouth. The small ball of pork placed inside a chewy, soft, smooth, and thin dimsum wrapper is made juicier by the umami-packed soup. Most people sip the soup before they get to eating the rest of the dimsum, but I want to suggest otherwise – try eating the whole thing (of course, after letting it cool for a bit).

Xiao Long Bao will always be a party inside your mouth but for me, Lugang Cafe's version is still the champ.

Noodles in Double Boiled Beef Soup (3.5/5)

Basically your rice noodles served with beef bulalo or nilaga. It sure tasted like that. The serving may look scrimp but because it's rice noodles, it was a really heavy meal. The meat was really tender and chewy with an almost melt-in-your-mouth kind of texture.

Service (4/5)

Even if it was a jam-packed day, the servers were really attentive and accommodating. We even received warm smiles that said "just wait, a table will be ready for you in a while" every so often when we were still waiting to be seated.

Although they could improve more on product knowledge. Our server had to call two more people just so they could tell us the best sellers and recommended dishes.

Tried this restaurant after our divisoria adventure. Since we were already in chinatown, why not have some chinese food, right?

We tried the noodles, dumplings, and buns. Here are my comments in detail:

Noodles with Shrimp and Pork Wanton
- Had this split in two and to be honest, half of it is good for one person already! The soup/broth was so good! The wantons were okay but the star was the noodles - it was chewy but not that filling.

Noodles with Double Boiled Beef Soup
- It had the same soup as the first dish but instead of wantons, there were beef strips.

Xiao Long Bao
- First time to have tasted xiao long bao and wanted to taste it because everyone's raving about it. When I got to taste it, it didn't disappoint. The broth was nice and the filling was good. It was a bit sour for me, for some reason. But it was fun eating it!

Deep Fried Asado Bun
- FAVORITE! When we all had our first bite of this baby, we all smiled with such enthusiasm. The bun itself was crunchy on the outside and chewy in the inside! The asado filling was sweet although it was a lot (so when you bite the bun, some of the filling will ooze out). The best part of this is that when you dip it in condensed milk (included), it will all come together and you'll hurriedly want another bite! My brother actually ordered another one to go 128522

Will definitely come back here (hopefully in a branch that's nearer my place). Service was good, too. Price is reasonable though I think "authentic" chinese food around binondo will cost less. Place was nice and there wasn't much people. Down side is that I think they only have 3 branches in Manila.

I'm feeling Chinese yesterday (2 Chinese Resto in a day) and while we're in Lucky Chinatown, we decided to eat in Shi Lin.

Everytime I pass by at this resto, I'm always laughing with the idea I have in mind, (it's not Shi lin, it's Solane) 128514

Kidding aside, we ordered a lot. We didnt know they have big servings and it's just the three of us. 128517

XIAO LONG BAO
Holy heavenly father, I think that the angels above, waved at me by just having my first bite. 128519 i didnt know that xiao long bao is as good as this. We had 10pcs of it and I had four. Hihihi

SHRIMP AND PORK WONTON SOUP
Their noodles are great, flavors are normal taste of a wonton soup. Big serving!

BRAISED BEEF SOUP
This tastes like pares, and it's good and yummy, with tender beef but the soup has this sweet flavor that will make you feel full.

FRIED RICE WITH SHREDDED PORK
At first I thought this will taste like so-so but no, the rice is great! You'll know that it's the best kind of rice, plus the taste is better than the normal fried rice. It's actually not salty. 128524

RED BEAN BUN
I didn't try this because Im so fixated in eating the xiao long bao. 128513

Overall experience is great and when we pay the bill, I was lucky because I automatically had the 15% off Using my Mastercard. 9996

Bought some xiao long pao from this resto and brought it home. I was curious because I've read great reviews regarding this dimsum and I was not disappointed. It was tasty and juicy and uggghhh 128523 too bad though that it was expensive. P155 for 6 very small pieces, thus the minus 1 star 128517 the servers were all smiles though so that was nice 128522

Shi Lin is a relatively Chinese place that serves dim sum and noodles, much like Crystal Jade.

Xiao long bao (Php 155)
The best I’ve tried in Manila! Miles ahead of the local Crystal Jade. Although I’m still hoping Crystal Jade Manila will step up and serve full-size dumplings with actual soup inside.

Braised Beef Soup (P235)
This was one of the more expensive dishes on the menu, and good thing it delivered. The broth on this dish didn’t taste like the usual one-dimensional beef broth that’s served in other restaurants. Their broth had a more interesting flavor profile because it had a bit of tanginess to it that complemented the rich taste of beef.

I enjoyed my dining experience in Shi Lin. I was really really impressed, I don't know if I was just hungry or what, but I liked everything that I ate there. I am excited to bring my family there to try it out.

I think one (if not the only one) of the reasons why this Taiwanese restaurant continues to survive is because of its xiao long bao. The rest of the food in their menu just seems too starchy (coz of the tons of breading) or too tangy.

My dad loves this place, and I used to love it too, okay. But I guess if you frequent this place way too often, you tend to lose that lovin'.

My usual order list consists of Taiwanese spinach, hot and sour soup (which continues to be a favorite aside from the xiao long bao), drunken chicken, chicken chop, noodles in peanut sauce and the dimsum.

They all taste good and simple at first, but after 3-4 visits, you notice how limited their menu is, or how small their servings are, or how that chicken chop just has way too much breading than actual chicken breast.

But because I love xiao long bao, and Shi Lin's the only one here that can almost copy the ones from Din Tai Fung, I guess it'll have to do. 128531
