Soru Izakaya offers affordable and delicious Japanese food. Ambiance was very Japanese and the lighting was perfect too. Staff were accommodating and attentive too. For the food,
We had Hiroshima Maki. Good for people who love spicy. I think it’s a nice idea to put gyoza wrapper into it for that pop. This was topped with Salmon cube.

Chizuni Mali is perfect for the kids. The cheese and tempura flakes made it fun to it. No wonder this is one of their best.

Our Tori Karaage was fried too long, I guess. It does not have that juiciness in it and there’s not much Mozarella.

Tantanmen had a generous amount of vegetables in it. Love the peanut broth and I like that it wasn’t that spicy at all. I just find the noodles too thick.

Shoyu Ramen tasted mild and has a thick Shoyu broth. Another great choice for the kids.

Tempura Ramen was loaded with vegetables and shrimp tempura. My favourite of all.

I can’t wait to comeback and try other dishes they offer.

Soru Izakaya is a Japanese Restaurant that fuses the traditional and modern techniques of cooking flavorful and delectable Japanese cuisines from Salads, Sashimi, Teppanyaki, Maki, to Donburi, Ramen, Kushiyaki, and beverages.

Manga-inspired wall décor filled the restaurant. While metal mixed with wood pieces of furniture such as chairs and tables occupy the dining area of Soru Izakaya. Japanese characters, on the other hand, were also painted on the chairs like the ones found in traditional Japanese Restaurants.

Kushiyaki is a Japanese staple dish that composed of grilled and skewered poultry and non-poultry products such as meat, vegetables, cheese, and seafood. Soru Izakaya serves 13 variety of kushiyaki.

Kushiyaki has sweet barbecue flavor with juicy and well-seasoned meat and tender vegetables.

Kushiyaki is served with a minimum order of three (3) sticks and platter which composed of 2 sticks of Bacon Enoki, Asura, Ggyuchizu, Shitake Mushroom, Butabara, and Yakitori.

Ebi and Kani Popcorn

Ebi and Kani Popcorn is composed of deep-fried shrimp (Ebi) and crab meat (Kani) in nori batter, topped with shoestring potatoes and served with spicy soru sauce.

This dish is crunchy on the outside with juicy and well-seasoned shrimp and crab meat on the inside. The nori batter gave a tinge of sweet and earthy flavor while the dip provided the spiciness to the dish.

Shake Salmon Sashimi

Shake Salmon Sashimi is made of chilled Norweigan salmon. Compared with the usual salmon served in other restaurants, Soru Izakaya's Norweigan salmon provides a clean taste and texture that it's as if the meat melts in your mouth. Since the salmon that they are serving is also chilled and not frozen, the salmon's fat is still intact with the former which provides a sweeter and tastier salmon.

Hiroshima Maki

Hiroshima Maki is made of salmon, spicy Japanese mayo, topped with fried gyoza wrapper and salmon sashimi cubes marinated in spicy sauce.

People who love spicy foods will surely love Hiroshima Maki. This dish is full of texture coming from the crunchy gyoza wrapper. While the sweetness of salmon, the spicy flavor of mayo and sauce blends well.

Paella Maki

Soru Izakaya has two variations of Paella Maki- Akai and Kuro Paella Maki.

Akai Paella Maki is made of sausage, red paella rice asparagus, tamago, and arabiki with teriyaki and aioli sauce. Akai Maki has the perfect blend of sweetness coming from the mayo, saltiness from the sausage.

Kuro Paella Maki is seafood paella maki. It has squid ink paella rice and salmon marinated in special sauce, asparagus, kani, shrimp and squid with aioli sauce. Kuro Paella Maki has sticky black paella rice with juicy shrimp and crunchy cucumber. The flavors of the ingredient blended perfectly.

Nori Tempura

Soru Izakaya's tempura is made of deep-fried tiger prawn in nori batter. The nori batter gave a whole new twist with the typical tempura that is being served in other Japanese restaurants in Manila. It gave this dish a sweet and earthy flavor. The outside of the tempura is crunchy while the tiger prawn meat inside is juicy and well-seasoned.

Shake Belly Aburi

Shake Belly Aburi is made of torched Norweigan salmon belly with teriyaki sauce, Japanese and truffle mayo, and ikura or salmon roe.

Shake Belly Aburi emits a sweet flavor in every bite. The salmon belly is juicy and melts in your mouth while the fats of the salmon that are still intact with the former add more flavors to it.

Matcha Cheesecake

Every slice of Soru Izakaya's Matcha Cheesecake is composed of layers of matcha and white chocolate cheesecake with buttered graham crust, topped with matcha powder and drizzled with chocolate syrup.

Soru Izakaya's Matcha Cheesecake is not your typical cheesecake, it tastes like ice cream cake with a tinge of earthy flavor coming from the layers of matcha in it. This cake is definitely a Must Try!

I had high expectations for this place because of all the positive reviews on looloo. Unfortunately, my experience wasn't that great.

Upon entering, I noticed that the place was really nice. We were seated immediately as it was around 9 pm already, which meant that most of the dinner crowd has already left.

I ordered the spicy tuna salad, salmon belly aburi, and yakitori. When the salmon aburi was served, my initial reaction was, "that's it?" It was really tiny and the salmon slice was thin. If I added a bit more to the price, I'd be able to get Ooma's salmon skin aburi maki, which is one of my faves. Tastewise, I find Soru's lacking.

Next came the spicy tuna salad. I've had better spicy tuna I suppose. My complaint here was that the tuna cubes were tiny. It's only slightly bigger than a kernel of corn.

Then came the yakitoris. You can't tell in the photo, but they're also small. If you've been to other yakitori places, Soru's is about half the size.

We also got the gyudon (not in photo), which had thinly sliced beef.

Quite disappointed with the food portions. For the same price, you'd be able to get more food in other establishments. Taste is just okay. Service is just okay. They accept credit cards, which is plus .5 stars in my book. My final verdict? 2.5 stars.

Honestly, it's 2.5.

Aesthetically, it is a 4 but man, I don't judge with my eyes. I'm not really looking for something 'instagrammable'. I'm after the taste.

Overall, everything was an overkill of what they are trying to achieve in terms of the concept of modern japanese. To make it simple, 'Nakakaumay'. We did not even finish our order as it was too heavy in terms of flavor.
And i felt bad because I was expecting something better since this is highly raved about.
I would rather travel 2.5 hrs to get to my nearest Ooma branch.

Sorry. :(

Jap food is everything! 128525 I rarely visit QC since it's too far from my place so when I was invited for an eatup at Soru Izakaya, Maginhawa, I knew it's gonna be worth it! 128527

Meeting time was 2pm and we arrived past 3pm (and I havent eaten lunch 128547) but good thing they patiently waited for us. Thanks for the consideration guys! 128514

We tried mostly their best sellers:

•Tori Karaage (P190) - chicken karaage with cheddar and mozarella! This is one of the fave and a must try!

•Ebi and Kani popcorn (P280) - deep fried ebi and kani with spicy sauce and shoestring potatoes

•Shake Sashimi (P420) - chilled norweigan salmon
•Maguro (P280) - tuna

•Saikoro "Wagyu" cubes (P440) - their best seller! Iton grilled cubes with mixed vegetables

•Hiroshima Maki (P290) - I admit, I ate a lot of this! Haha sorry guys! This is really my top fave. I love how the spicy japanese mayo mixed with fried gyoza and salmon sashimi cubes marinated in spicy soru sauce! 128293

•Kuro Dragon Maki (P480) -fresh water eel, cream cheese and asparagus topped with ebiko and drizzled with teriyaki sauce and jap mayo

•Shake Belly Aburi (P220) - torched salmon with teriyaki sauce, wasabi mayo and ikura

•Jori Tempura - Nori flavored deep fries tiger prawn
3pcs (P240) 5pcs (360) 8pcs (520)

Kushiyaki: (I ate a lot of this too! 128514128586)
•Bacon Asparagus (P85)
•Bonjiri (P45)
•Kosho Buta (P110)
•Bacon Enoki (P65)
•Shiitake Mushroom (P50)

•Matcha Cheesecake (P240)- We had a history on this!! Gone in 1minute LOL 128514128514 Can you imagine how good it is? If you're not paying attention, you wont even get the chance to taste it 🤣 This is their best seller and I loved it so much!

•Tiramisu (P220) - Again, attention is the key! I like this one too but I still prefer the matcha cheesecake

•Blue Geisha (P240) - Gin, grapefruit, lemon, blueberry

Definitely worth the travel!! I dont mind going to QC for this 10084
But it's better if they're gonna open a branch within Makati or BGC 128514

This place surprised me to say the least. There's so much happening in Maginhawa that I tend to think that its a place where restaurants go for gimmick rather than quality. BUT this place proved me wrong. It can have a good gimmick combined with its good quality

I'll get on with it.

1.) Shake Belly Aburi: One of my top picks here. It's salmon belly sushi with some of their delicious sauce. I didn't expect it to taste so good. Definitely a must try

2.) Toro Karaage: Didn't realize there was cheese on it until I ate it. The cheese didn't mess up the over all flavor of the dish. Surprisingly good!

3.) Saikoro Wagyu Cubes: By definition it's already good. Wagyu is always a win for me. If you're a fan as well, go for this.

4.) Dragon Maki: so..... There were 4 kinds served for us. They were the most instagramable out of all the dishes served
-Kuro Paella Maki: paella turned maki; again, surprisingly good
-Hiroshima Maki: spicy salmon with gyoza; i think i liked this the best out of all the Makis
-Shake Furai Maki: Maki without the rice; it was definitely good and interesting but I like my Makis with rice
-Slamon and salad wrapped with Tamago; this was hard for me to eat but it was good as well.

5.) Sashimi Moriwase: You're typical sashimi platter. You could never go wrong with it.

6.) Nori Tempura: You're tempura with nori coating as well. At first bite the nori flavor didn't reach my tounge but when i stopped dipping it on sauce the flavor suddenly popped. It was a different Tempura experince. Iit's a good dish all in all.

7.) Kushiyaki Platter: My absolute favorite of the bunch. It was hard for me to choose which I love the most. I ended up with the Butabaru but even then o'm not yet totally convinced it's my real favorite among the platter. The teriyaki sauce they used brings out great flavor for the whole platter.

8.) Matcha Cheesecake: I was so happy ot wasn't so sweet. I've tasted a matcha cheesecake before (forgot where) but ot was so sweet it over-powered the matcha flavor. This definitely did not disappoint

9.) Rising Sun Takoyaki Dessert: It's takoyaki but with dessert flavors. It's a hot dessert so watch out. This plus the the Matcha chessecake is a good one two punch. Cold plus hot.

10.) Tiramisu: I'm a big sucker for tiramisu and theirs is a must try. I'm kind of biased with this so if you try it, judge it yourself.

Over-all it was a great food experience. Interesting and delicious. And it special thanks to #TeamKaldkarin for the invite and Soru Izakaya for the amazing dishes served.

BAD SERVICE! My siblings and I were so excited to try this restaurant because the food reviews were great. Unfortunately, we had a bad service experience. Upon entering the restaurant, all the tables were occupied but there was no queue, so we were the first in line for the walk-in customers. While waiting, they advised us to wait at the bar first (in front of the cooking area). We agreed. Few minutes after, few tables were already available (after some customers were done eating), but still we don't have one because they said it's for those who reserved. Ok, understandable. But over 30 minutes, we noticed two tables that were not reserved, became available. Still they did not give the table to us! The employees there (the one who said we're next in line, those who took our orders) did NOT coordinate! They didn't know we were waiting for a long time at the bar! And they gave away other tables that were supposed to be ours. 128542 Why would you prioritize those who just called over the phone (as in at that moment) than those who waited for more than 30 minutes (first in line walk-in customer). It would be understandable if there was a long queue, but there wasn't! You should have all your tables under reservation in that case. How disappointing! All good things (ambiance, food, display) can be cancelled out by a very bad service experience. I hope you'll improve your service. 128542

Honestly I wasn't expecting much when we visited Soru Izakaya. I always thought of maginhawa resto more of a gimik and less quality but Soru Izakaya proved me wrong. More to their Instagramable colorful dragon maki their food are legit japanese good.

The vibe of the place is modern Japanese. With bold colorful wall art. This place is made to catch more of the younger generation. The place remind me of Ooma bold modern japanese.

Now for the good part, the food. All their food are well beautifully plated and tasted flavorly good. A more bold taste compared to the classic japanese resto we use to grow up with. So here was what we tried.

128088Tori Karaage - this one is good but better eat it while freshly served hot. Chicken Karaage with melted cheese to make it better. Love it giving twist to our fave Karaage.

128088Ebi and Kani Popcorn - another appetizer. This was like a modern take to tempura with bit of picnic like toppings. It was also good but I still prefer may old school tempura but this one is good for pica-pica.

128088Shake Belly Aburi - Salmon belly sushi topped with their delicious sauce. I love the strong delicious flavor of their dressing. Another hit for me.

128088Sashimi Moriwase - A sashimi platter of their fresh sashimi. Wasn't able to try it all out but the Octopus was what I went for. I love it.

128088Nori Tempura - your classic tempura topped with nori to make a twist. Love the ebi tempura but wished more flavor from nori. Winslow (the owner) funnily told us that some are saying the Nori flavor is too powerful while the other are requesting more Nori flavor haha. So I think you just need to request more or less nori when you order.

128088Royal Seafood Teppan - A platter of grilled seafood. This one for me was the weakest maybe because it wasn't that hot anymore when we ate it due to the pictorial but the scallop and squid are still yummy.

128088Saikoro Wagyu Cubes - your typical wagyu cubes. Nothing special but as a fan of wagyu cubes this was a hit for me.

128088Dragon Maki - We were able to have 4 variety of their colorful dragon maki. This maki are totally Instagram worthy. My fave was the Hiroshima Maki. It was spicy salmon with fried gyoza on top. Love the combination of crunchiness and spiciness. While the Shake Furai Maki was another unique dish that they serve. Imagine maki minus the rice. This one is created for the people who wants to have maki minus the rice haha. Salmon and Salad green wrapped in tamago. This was also something I like but quite a bit messy when eaten. Another fave is the Kuro Paella Maki. Squid Ink Paella turned into a maki. Wow this place is really creative.

128088Kushiyaki Platter - In this platter my fave was the gyuchizu. Beef with melted cheese yummy! Another fave was the Butabaru, grilled pork belly. Love the teriyaki sauce that they use to flavor the meat.

128088Matcha Cheesecake - Another IG worthy item on their menu. This one was good but the cheesecake was a bit powerful in flavor compared to the matcha. You'll definitely love it but for true fan of matcha they will be looking for more bitterness in it.

128088Rising Sun Takoyaki Dessert - Another great creative twist to a japanese snack. Takoyaki turned into a dessert yey!!! Love the red velvet takoyaki. Soft and yummy. Perfect with the cream cheese, ganache and strawberry.

128088Tiramisu - my fave of the dessert. Layered coffee finger, cream cheese frosting, cocoa powder, ganache, blueberry and mint leaves. This one is a must try on their dessert.

Overall love their dishes and they just gave Maginhawa a good name. Modern Bold and amazingly good place to have a japanese food. For alcohol drinker also try their list of mixed cocktails.

This place is truly one of a kind in the area, as you all know, most of the restaurants in maginhawa offers affordable food. And we all know that most of those food will just basically fill up your stomach without satisfying your taste buds. Soru izakaya may not be at par with the average price range from the restaurants found in the area, but it did overly satisfied our tastebuds during the eatup.

The restaurant is managed by a group of young filipino Chinese business men (eatupmnl). This is their second project; the group came up with this concept of modernizing Japanese cuisine. So they wanted to do away from the simplistic Japanese style.

128204 Tori Karaage @190PhP
Chicken strips with torched cheddar and mozzarella cheese! Please eat this while hot.

128204 Ebi and Kani Popcorn @280PhP
Shrimp and crab bites with spicy Soru sauce drizzled all over. Potato shoestring for your carb appetizer ration.

128204128525 Shake Belly Aburi @220PhP
Amazing tasty and soft torched salmon belly. The teriyaki sauce and japanese mayo really works well with the sushi rice

128204128525 Sashimi Moriwase @650PhP
Combination of sashimi-- tuna, salmon, mackerel, horse mackerel, and octopus (3pcs each)

128204128525 Nori Tempura @240/ 360/ 520PhP (3/ 5/ 8pcs)
Tiger prawns nori flavored batter. I find the nori taste just right. Some say it was too light, but the smell is already enough.

128204128525 Royal Seafood Teppan @440PhP
Goodness of grilled salmon, shrimp, tuna, scallops, and squid. Just order rice!

128204128525 Saikoro Wagyu Cubes @440PhP
The good stuff 128077🏼
The wagyu cubes are soft like pork fat portion. Melts in the mouth.

128204 Shake Furai Maki @290PhP
It got pan-sautéed salmon and salad greens all wrapped in tamago wrapper. Then drizzled with tempura bits and spicy mayo sauce. My least favorite because the egg did not taste that great. I suggest to consume right away.

128204128525 Oh Umi Maki @390PhP
Shrimp tempura and salmon cubes with spicy Soru sauce topped with more salmon and tempura sauce. More flavors of teriyaki and truffle mayo sauce!

128204128525 Kuro Paella Maki @490PhP
I love the innovation. They use squid ink paella rice with salmon in specialSoru sauce. It also got asparagus, kani, shrimp, and squid with aioli sauce. My favorite!

128204128525 Kani Shuriken Maki @240PhP
This one has the most crunchiest texture. It got spicy Japanese mayo, teriyaki and cheese sauce. My next favorite!

128204128525 Kushiyaki Platter @650PhP
Contains bacon enoki, asura (quail egg with bacon), gyuchizu (beef stuffed with cheese), shiitake mushroom, butabara, and yakitori (chicken leg). I just love each serving because everything grilled just right and flavored with sweet teriyaki sauce.

128204128525 Matcha Cheesecake @240PhP
This is better matcha cheesecake compared to izakaya sensu. Although i still can't taste matcha flavor, the white chocolate cheesecake is still overpowering. But anyway, this is good. The serving is a lot bigger than Starbucks cheesecake. Frozen consistency.

128204 Rising Sun Takoyaki Dessert @180PhP
Your takoyaki made dessert. It's composed of white and red velvet batter with cream cheese, marshmallows and nuts for texture. This is served hot, so i personally don't like hot desserts.

128204128525 Tiramisu @220PhP
Coffee infused lady fingers layered with cream cheese and whip cream; topped with blueberries and surreal mint leaves. If you are a tiramisu person, then you're gonna love this. This is especially good because it is frozen. Thaw it a bit if you want it softer.

Soru also got signature bar drinks! And i got to try:

128204128525 Hentosen or Blue Geisha @240PhP
It got gin, grapefruit, lemon and blueberries. I love the fruity accent of the alcohol.

Every Friday soru got Sake Night. They have a carafe of Sake served at 149Php only from 7PM to 2AM. Live DJ sets from DJs from Beat Project Manila on that night.

Every Saturday, Sapporo Saturdays--Soru Sapporo premium Draft beer is priced at 180Php regular price but for Saturdays its on sale at 99Php only.

I am amazed i got a lot of recommendations for you this time. Hope you really get to try Soru--you will never be sorry

Japanese cuisine is definitely my favorite type of food, I could eat it everyday. I meant that literally. Hahaha 128569 So when Team K got invited to try out this new restaurant, I decided to fly out from Cebu for a quick vacation to join them. Father’s Day weekend din naman. 128569 But this was honestly a close second reason why I went for it. 128571

I’ve been hearing a lot of great things about this place for a while now so I was very excited to be able to sample some of their dishes. The photos I’ve seen have been super Instagrammable and the reviews I’ve read have all been very positive. Since then, I’ve had this on my must-try list for when I am able to come back to Maginhawa. 10084

We were warmly received by Winslow, their very young owner and he’s probably the coolest boss a staff could ask for. He’s very young. (I’ve mentioned that twice because it made me second guess my being. Hahahaha 128569) He’s very honest and a very pleasing person to talk to. He basically introduced us to the new Nippon cuisine where their whole menu is wrapped around in. It was definitely something that got me excited about. I wanted to try their alcoholic beverages because it was an Izakaya, but I was gonna drive so I resisted the urge to do so. Hahaha 128569 Definitely next time. 128571

This was one of the most festive eat-ups I've been to. They practically served us everything on their menu! But know as well that we devoured everything to the last crumb and last drop. That was a first for me during an eatup where everything served was totally consumed. 128569

Food (in order of appearance hahaha 128569)
1.) Tori Karaage
Perfectly crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside, these deep fried chicken pieces drizzled with some awesome sauce were one of the first dishes to come out from their kitchen during our eatup. It was delicious and a great way to start the meal. 128568

2.) Ebi and Kani Popcorn
Also a deep fried appetizer, this was also a sure win for me. I like ebi and I like kani, so if you batter and fry them and serve it with another awesome sauce, that's sold with me. I could imagine that this dish would go really well with their cocktails. 128571

3.) Shake Belly Aburi
Jusko, napakasarap! 128571 A generous slice of salmon belly sushi, topped with selected delicious sauces and blow torched, this gives a salmon fan absolute bliss! I will come back to try their Unaguro Aburi because unagi and tuna! 128571

4.) Sashimi Moriawase
The only way you can go wrong with sashimi if end up using seafoods that are not fresh. And Soru's sure was very fresh. I obviously went for the Shake (salmon) sashimi again, and I loved it! 10084️ I could easily finish this whole plate. They don't scrimp on portions either which is obviously a good thing!

5.) Nori Tempura
Just a tad under-seasoned for me but I still find this very very delicious! It just needed an extra umpf on the nori flavor, and this would have been amazing. Still I'm not complaining. I particularly liked the fact that the pieces of ebi they used for the Tempura were so big! 128571 Again, value for money at its finest. 128568

6.) Royal Seafood Teppan
This wonderful platter of grilled seafood is absolutely delicious! 128571 You could really taste that they only use fresh produce with the sweetness of the salmon coming out and the wonderful texture of the scallops. I absolutely loved this too! 128568

7.) Saikoro "Wagyu" Cubes
Haaayyy wagyu cubes! 128571 They're so tender and very flavorful! It just melts in your mouth! These grilled beef pieces are absolutely awesome!

8.) Hiroshima Maki
And then the makis started to come out. 128571 We started with the Hiroshima Maki. This probably is the most Instagrammable maki I have had in a while. And it's as good in term of taste as it looks! 10084️ Of course, spicy salmon is king! And with everything that they put on this maki creation, it was absolutely divine! 128571

9.) Shake Furai Maki
According to Sir Winslow, this is one of their healthier options for makis because they use tamago wrapper. I couldn't really tell the difference. 128569 It was a good thing though because I have this weird misconception that healthy food are kinda bland. Hahaha 128571 But this one's really delicious because once again, the sauce is really good! 128568

10.) Kushiyaki Platter
When this dish came out, I was starting to salivate. Hahaha 128569 It's very hard to be around really really good food and have to wait till everything is out because the photos are just as important as the words. I was very excited to try this! It smelled so good and it looks so good! And just as I expected, it tasted so good as well! 128571 Grabe! Everything on the platter was absolutely delicious! I can definitely eat this everyday! 128568

11.) Oh Umi Maki
I don't know what was on this maki but omeged, ansarap din! 128571 I think it was the truffled mayo that made it oh my gally wow! 128568 Of course, it still has salmon, so good na yan for me! 128571

12.) Kuro Paella Maki
This was absolutely delicious! They used paella negra to make this maki and it was sooooo good! 128571 A mesh of Spanish and Japanese, it was an amazing creation! I really loved it! 128571

13.) Matcha Cheesecake
After we literally wiped the plates clean, the desserts were served to us. I was really praying this will be included on the menu for the eatup and luckily, it was! Jusko ansarap talaga! Nakakaiyak level! 128569 The green tea was still pronounced and went very well with the very flavorful cheesecake. The texture was dope, very smooth and creamy. The sweetness was just right! I loved it! 128571

14.) Rising Sun Takoyaki Desserts
This was a wonderfully unusual dish. They were typically red velvet cheescake fried like small pieces of takoyaki. This warm dessert was very delicious too! Not too sweet cooked really well. I highly recommend this dessert too! 128568

15.) Tiramisu
We were pleasantly surprised that a last minute addition to the buffet spread came out. This tiramisu was really good too! It wasn't the same as the tiramisu I knew, but theirs was actually very tasty! 128571

I wanted to talk about the beverages, but I decided not to because it was just simply delicious too. I particularly loved my green iced tea! I was able to sip on the Blue Geisha drink and it was really good! 128571

All in all, Soru Izakaya truly is a gem in Maginhawa! And their prices are very well worth their food and serving sizes. I highly recommend this place to Japanese food addicts like me, and to everyone else. This place is great for friends, or even good for your next date place! 128568 I look forward to coming back! Again, thank you so much for te amazing meal! 10084

First time to eat Ramen and it was here. It was so good and craved for it the week after. Good thing we chose this restaurant over the others. Will definitely go back to bring my family here.

Decided to pay this place a visit earlier with my friend and we shared the following:

Gyuniku Maki (P240)
Beef misono, demi-glace, lemon, garlic and salad greens drizzled in truffle mayo.

Hiroshima Maki (P290)
Salmon, spicy Japanese mayo, topped with fried gyoza wrapper and salmon sashimi cubes marinated in spicy Soru sauce.

Tantanmen (P220)
Spicy miso and peanut broth with chasu pork , soft boiled eggs and mixed vegetables.

And I ordered a glass of Kyuri Green Iced Tea (P85)

The place is really beautiful and the Maki were presented in a very Instagrammable manner. The Gyuniku was pretty good but I wish they put more beef misono. The Hiroshima was okay. I found it a little too expensive considering the location and the taste. The Tantanmen was OK as well.I loooved the Kyuri Green Iced Tea!

Overall, I would probably come back and try other stuff on their menu as I think this deserves another chance. Lol. Also, The place got really packed during Sunday lunchtime. Good thing we went at around 11:30am. So if you wanna try it out, better get a reservation. And oh, they only accept cash!

There's a new Japanese restaurant in Maginhawa that's making a lot of buzz since it opened last month with its beautiful plating and Instagram-worthy spread. I was a bit iffy to try it myself as I've been to several restaurants that focused more on design than taste. But curiosity hit me bad and soon I found myself in front of Soru Izakaya one Saturday afternoon.

Hello, Soru Izakaya.

We were welcomed by dark and warm interiors as well as Japanese inspired murals and wall designs. There were not a lot of diners too at 4:30 p.m. but the place was quite warm as not all A/C units were on.

We decided to go with Spicy Maguro Salad (PHP290), Oh Umi Maki (PHP390), Shake Belly Aburi (PHP220), Kuro Dragon Maki (PHP480), Aburi Moriawase + Sake Carafe (PHP480), Bacon Enoki (PHP65), Saikoro Wagyu Cubes (PHP135) and Shiitake Mushrooms (PHP50).

First served was the platter of aburi--shake, maguro, saba, horse mackarel and tako.

Since there were four of us, I was only able to taste the maguro (tuna) and it was pretty good. It was a bit spicy from the wasabi but it enhanced the taste of the aburi. Though the platter seems a bit pricey, the free sake carafe made it a good deal.

Next served was the plate of Kuro Dragon Maki. I have to admit, we ordered this because I was hoping I'd get to take a photo of Soru's beautiful plating and artistic way of serving Japanese mayo. Unfortunately, instead of a dragon design, I got abstract wiggly lines. Though I was disappointed with the presentation, the maki's taste didn't. It was pretty good. The unagi was fresh and I loved how the cream cheese, ebiko and teriyaki sauce added flavor without overwhelming or masking the beautiful seafood's taste.

Spicy Maguro Salad was served soon after and it was not the type I was looking forward to.

The tuna bits were not as fresh as the one in the aburi platter.

The dish was also very dependent on the spicy Japanese mayo as the parts that didn't get much of the dressing were on the bland side.

The salmon belly aburi was great. Served warm and topped with teriyaki sauce, truffle mayo and ikura, a bite would bring you straight to salmon heaven.

I just found the price a bit too steep as other well-loved Japanese restaurants offer this for less than a hundred a piece. I guess truffle mayo costs an additional thirty bucks.

It was love at first bite with the Oh Umi Maki. The plate of shrimp tempura and salmon cubes topped with salmon and tempura flakes and sweet teriyaki sauce and fragrant truffle mayo made my taste buds go crazy. Though purists would say that there are too many things going on and masks the delicate taste of salmon and shrimp, this plate of goodness is absolutely delectable! I might be a bit biased though as I love salmon.

The yakitoris were great as well. Each one was drizzled with a sweet sauce.

My favorite was the wagyu stick. It had a nice bite to it and was seasoned well.

Overall, it was a good meal but pricey for an establishment in Maginhawa. Service though needs a bit of improvement as the servers were not so attentive during our visit.

Hipster Japanese Restaurant in Maginhawa.
The plating of their sushi was what made me go to Soru Izakaya. The menu were interesting. Sushi rolls were so good just like ooma. (craving for more rolls) Also tried their cheesy chicken karaage, okonomiyaki and ramen.

Since I saw a post/review of this restaurant a few weeks ago, I've been wanting to go. So tonight, finally got to check it out.

Firstly- the interiors are quite nice. Had an industrial Japanese feel with high ceilings, cool lighting, a vibrant mural, an open kitchen and in the center, a fully stocked bar.

The bathroom was clean and the staff courteous and friendly.

The menu and selections were interesting too. Playful.
So we ordered. Poke, sashimi, a donburi, a maki, tempura and an aburi nigiri.

Almost all disappointed. Food wasn't bad per se, but it's never good when how the food is plated is the star and not the taste or quality.

First off- the rice used on the donburi and the sushis were over cooked . That's not good. The rice quality was not grade A Japanese rice either. If I'm paying P350+ for a sushi roll, I expect superior Japanese sushi rice.

The katsudon was too wet.
The maki was fried too long, the fish got cooked.
There was too much rice in the nigiri and it was torched too long.

The tempura was ok.
The ramen was so so.
The tea wasn't hot.

I couldn't find fault with the salmon sashimi. It was fresh and served the at the right temperature.

Bottom line. Pricey for what you're getting. For the same price , you would spend the same thing at Ooma or a Japanese resto on Pasay road and get far superior Japanese food.

If you just wanna Instagram your dinner with the barkada and have a few beers. Sure check out Soru Izakaya. But if you want quality Japanese - skip this place.

I won't be coming back.

This was surprisingly cheap! We only paid 670php for two sets of sushi rolls (8pcs/set) and a bowl of ramen. The plating was what made me go to Soru but the food made me want to come back the next day.... Sushi rolls were so good, you'll forget about the plating. Lol. We had the one with kani and tempura and the other set had salmon in it. Tantanmen was ok, broth was thick and spicy

It is located along Sikatuna, Maginhawa. In front of Robinsons Bank/Fashion Empire Cafe.
