I used to go to Sumosam for my Japanese fix before all the other specialty Japanese restos opened up in Manila. I love their sushi here so when me and my friends decided to meet for a quick catch up at SM North EDSA, I suggested this place.

I ordered the Ginza Tendon - a donburi consisting of 3 prawn tempura and assorted vegetable tempura (potato, okra, eggplant) on a bed of steamed Japanese rice.

When the dish was served to me, there was no sauce to accompany it so I asked one from the server. She said that they already drizzled sauce on my bowl. I gave her a puzzled look, but she was quick to tell me she'll give me a separate sauce. The tempura is coated thickly in batter and with the sauce already poured, I was given a soggy not-so-crispy tempura. Boo. The rice is sooooo good, tho (I love Japanese rice!!!). It was served with a bowl of miso soup. In fairness, they were generous with the seaweed and tofu.

The other thing I ordered is the spicy tuna roll. I liked it too! The roll has the seasoned tuna and crispy tempura crumbs as topping. It has the right amount of heat from the spicy seasoning and sweetness from the fresh tuna. The sushi rice was perfectly seasoned as well!

The place looks outdated as well as tjheir marketing collaterals like the menu. I wish they can improve on this so as to keep up with the recent trends in restaurant dining.

One word to describe their food: sad.

Their dynamite roll (spicy salmon?) was spicy in the worst way. It had waaaay too much chili powder, so much you couldn't taste the raw fish on top. 128542 Nakakaumay, I could only have two pieces.

We also tried their kani nori tempura, which was just okay. The tempura sauce was a little off though. Lastly, their chicken and chips comes with tartar sauce, which is weird. Shouldn't it come with Japanese mayo? Would've preferred that. 9996🏼️

Service was quite slow as well. Step it up please, Sumo Sam!

Sumosam is an upscale version of Teriyaki Boy/Tokyo Tokyo wherein you're bound to come across a branch wherever you go. It has this mass produced taste. Mass production=slow service. 128530128513128078🏼 Food is okay, not my first choice though.

Tip: Meals are good for sharing 128522

What to Order:
1. Spicy Caravan
2. Mt. Fuji Steak
3. Wagyu Rice

We missed Sumosam after our favorite branch in Trinoma closed in favor of another Filipino fusion restaurant.

This branch, however, is smaller - probably has 25% less dining capacity. However, the crew here is way slower! We waited for our food for more than half an hour -- almost twice as long as we normally wait for at the Trinoma branch.

Anyway, I don't know if this is an overall change in the way Sumosam is being managed, or maybe it is just this branch only. I guess we will have to see -- after we get to try another branch again in the future.

First off, free tea. :)

Then as always, I love their chicken teriyaki. Also ordered ebi tempura which we also enjoyed.

It's a bit expensive compared to their neighbour Yabu considering that they don't offer unlimited servings of some of their food.

I'm not aware that there was a SumoSam near Yabu at The Block..
Me and my bff was undecided what to eat., coz we've almost tried every resto here at SM North. We wanted Yabu but we wanted something new., so we tried here at SumoSam.. The price is almost the same as Yabu but I love their rice toppings coz it was huge! I didn't even finish mine coz it was too much for me to handle.. 128514
All in all., were pretty satisfied with everything..

Ever since i started eating sumosam sushi, i can't stop! I've been addicted to their fried cheese maki and i have been ordering this a number of times this month. But one time i asked someone to buy some for me, also because she was buying something from Sumosam and so yeah, i got my order and before eating it I noticed that this is not what cheese fried maki is suppose to look like!! Look at the comparison picture I made. Can you see that my order is way way darker than the original frying color? Also, it's super oily, per bite gives off a super oily feeling in my mouth which is disgusting. I have to guess that this is an old fried maki and was re-fried when ordered? Or did they use super old oil? It's super yuck. I was super hungry and decided to suffer with the oilyness and now I'm regretting that I did not complain (well I had stuff way important than sushi, but you know) I paid the right amount of money. I deserve to be served the right food!!

I'm just sayin'

Before going in for duty, me and my duty partner Amanda, wanna have late lunch, bit since hunger had already passed us by, we wanna have something light. I was craving for sushi, that's why Amanda had no choice but to eat sushi with me. Yay! Haha.

Upon sitting, i had so much choices, but ended up ordering the usual california maki, salmon sashimi and miso soup. Wow, something light pala haha.

We enjoyed the food, everything tastes so fresh 128516

Unlimited Sushi promo is SULIT! 128514128514128514

I told myself I would never eat here again kasi it's overpriced. However, I got intrigued with their unlimited sushi promo! I couldn't resist because the selection of makis included in the promo are some of their tastiest rolls. 128522

So I tried it with a friend. 128522 I went there really hungry, as in I starved myself so I can make the most of the payment. As expected, there's no eating merienda or dinner for me after it. I don't even think I can eat breakfast tomorrow with how full I am! Definitely sulit! I got to sample 9 of their best-selling makis, and was even able to avail 2nds of my favorites! 10084️

They give you a list of the makis included and you simply check the ones you would like to eat. The makis are served in 3-4 pieces per type. No sharing and no leftovers so you have to make sure you only get what you can finish. Otherwise, they'll charge you the ala carte rate of every sushi you leave on your plate. (Don't let this happen kasi mahal, promise!)

And the rolls are really good too. I also kept computing in my head if I availed everything ala carte, I definitely would dig a whole in my pocket. But the Php 500++ fee was well worth it for a sushi nut like me! 128525128525128525

They didn't include rolls with unagi though. Pero still, I would definitely come back while this promo is still ongoing, granted I am able to prepare my tummy again for the experience! 128076128076128076

I ordered the Spicy Tuna Salad. I hated it. It was bland and was not worth the price. AT ALL. Just the thought of it bores me - so does my review. Hahaha, sorry!

PS i was famished so I ate the salad in one go. That explains the photo...128513

The food was great!

I ordered the Katsudon and the serving is huge though the Japanese Rice wasn't sticky/moist enough so I had a hard time when I used chopsticks. But nevertheless, the presentation and taste is awesome!

We also ordered the Spicy Tuna Salad! It was my first time eating raw Tuna and I liked it! Will definitely order the salad again!

I think the branch needs to improve their service crew. Our waiter dropped the serving spoon of the salad on my friend. Good thing it didn't land on her head because the spoon had dressing all over it. The crew should also check each table from time to time whether the customers need something.
