Late post. 2nd time here but it was not as good as our first.
For one, the salmon sashime, although still very good was not as perfect compared to our first visit which was very fresh and melts in your mouth.
Second, there was no uni (sea urchin) sashime 128553128545
The spicy tuna maki and kani salad were very good while the asupara bacon was just good.
Luckily they serve Big Scoop ice cream here and the avocado flavored ice cream was FTW!128077128077128526

In a world of fusion cuisine, it is always good to go back to simple, traditional and authentic Japanese cuisine, and Tanabe delivers this. Located on the second floor of an old building in Jupiter Street in Makati, this is still a hidden gem and a good equal alternative to Kikufuiji, which is now always full and difficult to reserve after word got out. It is with hesitation, therefore, that I share this, as part of me, tells me to just keep it under the radar. But ... good food needs to be shared!

There is no star chef in this restaurant, but you could see a Japanese chef at the helm of the sushi counter. You can also see that half of the tables are occupied by Japanese expats, which is always a good sign for authenticity. While the menu is also simple (no fancy fusion dishes here), the dishes are executed well, and the plating is simple yet beautiful and unpretentious. Pricing, however, remains typical of Japanese restaurants (meaning on the high side), but the food quality is good.

First time we went here food was better and serving was bigger..now it seemed smaller and quality is not that perfect. I'd choose to go to nihonbanshitei instead next time

First time. Treated my wife here on her birthday and we had a great time!
The staff was kind enough to help us with the menu and these were what we ordered:
Complimentary Steamed egg in some kind of sweet sauce. It was so good I requested for two more (still free of charge!)
Shake (salmon) sashime - ftw! It's like that song "I don't like it, I love it love it love it ah ah" lol. Melts in your mouth, imported from Norway they said 128077128077
Uni (sea urchin) - delicious128077128077
Maguro (tuna) sashime - my wife's favorite and she loved it!128077128077
Tempura and asupara bacon were good too!
Our friend ordered the salmon bento box and it was just ok according to her. She like the shake and uni more.
Happy wife = happy life!

Had a sudden craving for sashimi, but the Japanese place nearest the office had a long waitlist, so we decided to try Tanabe.

Spicy salmon (pictured) - I debated between this and the tuna, and this won in the interest of trying something new. I think this works better with tuna than with salmon. The tempura crumbs were makunat, not crunchy. 128531

Salmon sashimi - fresh, good size serving 128077🏻

They did not have any tamago sushi/sashimi, which made me very sad. They did have this tamago cake, but it was not what I was craving for (it tasted like scrambled eggs).

My colleagues and I decided to give this place a try. It did not disappoint at all! It's pricey though and servings are a little bit small 128513 however, if you're looking for an authentic Japanese place - this is the place to be! 128522 They also serve green tea and silk tofu for free! We had tempura maki, grilled salmon and oyster, salmon sashimi and fried rice. I liked the maki very much 128525 will come back for more!!

For me, it's the best Japanese restaurant in Manila. Nothing but great food. Price is okay. Worth it for the quality of the food they serve.

Back at Tanabe! But this time for lunch and their awesome lunch sets 128525

I ordered the Tekka Don lunch set which consists of unbelievably fresh tuna sashimi on a bed of Japanese rice, miso soup, salad, and a bowl of cold noodles with its own dipping sauce. All this for php320!

Fresh seafood & masterfully rolled Japanese maki. What more can you ask for in an authentic Japanese restaurant.

It was my first time dining at Tanabe and it blew my mind! 128563 awesome food and great service to boot.

I think it was partly because I was starving at the time and partly because I haven't been this impressed by my salmon sashimi since I ate at Wafu.

I had the salmon roll which is very similar to a California maki but the outside of the roll is covered in thin slivers of melt in your mouth salmon and each roll is topped with eye popping salmon roe. Delicious!

Can't wait to come back. Definitely a restaurant I recommend to all sushi lovers. Plus it is a food sign when you find yourself eating at a Japanese restaurant surrounded by Japanese people.
