A couple of weeks ago, I received a recommendation from Bella J for a cafe in UP Town Center. One look on the items they serve -- and I'm sure Josh and I would enjoy it here. A couple of days after that, I saw one of my high school batchmates post this on his page, and I took it as a sign that we have to visit this place as soon as we can.
We finally visited The Fat Seed Cafe + Roastery two weeks ago, since we had to visit UP Town Center to watch The Shape of Water. When we arrived, we were in awe at how nice the place is. We quickly sat down and browsed through their magazine type menu (plus points for this super cute menu too!), and got the following for our lunch:
✅ FOR SHARING: MUSHROOM FRITTERS (Php 175) -
Okay. So we both LOVED this! As in we can't stop munching on them. It's actually a seemingly healthier alternative to your usual sinful chicharon. It's still fried, but at least it's lesser evil. We loved how they were crunchy, but has a distinct chewiness when you get to the middle, and you can still taste and feel the mushroom in it. So so so good! I hope they can come up with another dip though. Ketchup is good, but it lacked oomph.
✅ FOR ME: BUTTERMILK FRIED CHICKEN WITH UBE WAFFLE IN SALTED EGG SAUCE (Php 325) -
I was choosing between this and the Quinoa Bowl, but thought I'd splurge that day. I made a good choice, because the chicken thigh fillet was big and juicy, and the waffles were fluffy. The salted egg sauce was a bit sweet for my liking, though. Something I realized as I popped the last bite of chicken and waffles in my mouth -- it's truly as sinful and scrumptious as it looks. No regrets, though!
✅ FOR JOSH: THE FAT SEED BENEDICT WITH HOMEMADE MAPLE BACON SLAB (Php 295) - 1/2 (4.5)
I was able to try a bite, but I wasn't able to fully savor the flavors, which was why I asked for a review from him. Here's what he had to say: "It was absolute heaven for me. The eggs were cooked perfectly, with the runny yolk that coats everything in rich, creamy sauce. The bacon slabs were thick and juicy, while the salad and salad dressing add that needed crunch and tanginess to the ensemble . My only gripe is how it lacks in the salty department. The eggs were not seasoned enough and the bacon was cooked with maple syrup so it was more sweet than salty. A touch saltiness would've made the dish perfect. "
✅ FOR JOSH: COLOMBIA SINGLE ORIGIN V60 SPECIALTY COFFEE (Php 150) -
Josh was giddy to try the coffee here. He loved it! According to him, the aroma was very enticing and the flavor had a chocolate taste with fruity undertones. As for me, I just took a sniff and I already felt that it was too strong for my liking.
Service is great and memorable. All the staff were trained well, and you can feel that their willingness to serve is genuine. They are attentive at all times, too. The ambiance was very homey but a bit hipster. The interiors were as instagrammable as their scrumptious food!
The Fat Seed is definitely the place to be when you love coffee, a chill ambiance, and picture worthy food. I hope there will be more noise about this restaurant, because they deserve it. I heard they recently lauched their full menu already, so I'd definitely come by to check it out again soon!

I've been here thrice since it opened its doors last February 13 and I can happily say that it's my favorite restaurant in UP Town and Katipunan I just really enjoy the ambiance. Perfect for working or studying. It's easy to zone out and focus on your work and the super yummy food. Plus, there's wifi. There are sockets. Jackpot!
During my first visit, The Fat Seed was still on soft opening but during my two other visits. I was super excited because the full menu was available! I'm seriously on a quest to eat every item on the magazine-type menu that The Fat Seed has (someone come with me!). HAHAHA. Here's what I ordered during my two most recent visits:
| TARTUFO PASTA (Php 310) - This one has truffle cream sauce, porcini, prosciutto, and Parmesan cheese. Really enjoyed this one! Pasta was al dente and there was just enough sauce to coat the noodles. I usually find tartufo pastas cloying after sometime but not this one!
| MANGO AFTER DARK (Php 125) - I think this will be my go-to drink here. Super refreshing!
| BRAZILIAN LIMEADE (Php 135) - When I asked what this was, I was told it's basically limeade and condensed milk. I was hesitant at first but when I tried it, it was good! Just the right sour kick 🏻
| THE FAT SEED SIGNATURE PORKCHOP (Php 395) - AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH IT'S SO, SO, SO GOOD I NEARLY DID A HAPPY DANCE WHEN I HAD MY FIRST BITE (kaso nahiya ako hahaha). Man, I can eat this over and over again. The beer brined porkchop was huge and was tender and cooked evenly. Slather on some of the sweet potato purée and homemade miso it's served with and you're all set! I actually can eat the miso and sweet potato purée together on their own. Super good! Wish there were more tomatoes on the plate, though. They really do cut through all the rich flavors.
Ah, writing about it's making me crave for it and I just ate it yesterday
If and when I can resist the porkchop, I'll probably try the Wagyu Pares, Hotate Soy Cream Pasta, or one of the Eggs Benedict on the menu (There's one with a slab of maple bacon, one that has corned beef hash, and another that has smoked salmon).
When you visit The Fat Seed, be ready with your cameras because everything's just so Instagrammable! Even the food!
The owners are also around every day (I eventually discovered that one of them attended the same HS as I did) so don't be shy and chat with them! Super accommodating, will answer your questions, and make sure you're having a great experience

Stumbled upon this coffee shop in U.P. town Center while walking around this afternoon, while in search of a coffee place to satisfy our ciffe cravings.
The owners were there to look after their customers’ and needs, getting feedbacks and just be plain good hosts! We liked the cold brew coffe and latte that we ordered. The cold brew was steeped (sorry for wrong spelling) usinga cool machine and not the traditional way. This produced a smooth, silky and definitely refreshing taste to coffee, just what I needed to get refreshed in the afternoon heat!
The dessert was made less sweet, which complemented peefrcyly to the coffe!
We’d definitely be back to try their savory meals and coffee!

Was wandering around UP Town yesterday when I noticed a newly opened cafe right next to Healthy Options. It's called The Fat Seed!
Upon entering, the first thought that entered my mind is, "Well, I'll be seeing this place on Instagram a lot." From the wooden furniture, sleek bar counter, to the art on the walls, the place really is picture-perfect. The ambiance itself makes it an ideal place to study or work, or to simply have a good meal with family and friends.
I had the Quinoa Bowl with Grilled Chicken (Php 320) and it's made up of red cabbage, baby radish, cucumber, onion leeks on a bed of quinoa. It's served with Honey Sriracha Miso and a poached egg. Really, really enjoyed this one. First of all, the presentation was spot on.
And the best thing about it was how the chicken was cooked! Perfectly cooked and the chicken had the right juiciness and tenderness. A lot of places mess up when they cook grilled chicken so any place that gets it right automatically gets plus points from me.
If I were to change something about the dish, I'd lessen the amount of leeks. A little bit goes a long way!
For drinks, I had the Mango After Dark (Php 125), which is an Earl Grey tea-based drink. Enjoyed this one as well. I liked how refreshing and cool to the palate it is. I could drink more than a cup of it.
The Fat Seed is currently on soft opening so their menu offerings are bit limited for now. But do watch out for the grand opening and the full menu! I was able to see a copy of the full menu and there are so many things on it that I'd love to try once they're available!
