A mixed bag here. The red clam chowder soup was excellent. The smoked salmon sandwich less so. While it is served as a sandwich, I discovered that is best eaten as an open sandwich - top off - instead of a traditional sandwich. The taste was nevertheless wonderful with pineapple chunks as a wonderful twist. Then came the coffee and I must say it was quite a disappointment. Sad really when you were hoping to cap the meal with a fantastic end and not getting it. Still, the rest of the experience pushed this to "like" over "ok". I hope they do better so it will be a "loved" the next time around... #loolooexplorerpackgiveaway

THE PERFECT ENSAYMADA - when the server puts down your plate, you'll come face to face with a soft fluffy buttery bread holding a glistening crown made with just-melted curls of cheese and sugar.

Stop. Stare. Breathe in that rich scent of butter.

Now bite.

As you take your first bite into the perfectly textured bread and taste the sweet purple filling inside... You can't help but believe that there was never a marriage more beautiful than the union of ube, cheese and butter.

Never too sweet, too buttery or too dense... The Diamond Hotel's ensaymada is truly a work of mastery that simply cannot be outdone!

A love of mine for many years and many more years to come!

The best ensyamada ever! Nothing comes closein terms of creaminess, tenderness and taste. No doubt it has become a classic and a signature pastry of the hotel.

I'm going to leave out how expensive the food was (also my friends bought all this and I just snacked on them lol) and why we were here.. But the ensaymada and the fries were yummy so yeah. 128514

Diamond Hotel lobby's Cake Club is one of our favorite place for high tea.

They serve baked goodies that is incredibly delicious. My old time favorite is their ensaymada. It is fluffy yet firm and filling. It is filled with pinoy's favorite Ube halaya and topped with creamy butter and cheddar cheese. The buttery and salty cheese complements the goodness of the bread. No wonder it is included on the top 10 best ensaymada in Metro Manila.

My mom really wanted to try the famous Diamond ensaymada from Diamond Hotel, so she invited us out for Sunday brunch... Yey, libre!128077
I think it was featured in an episode of Kris TV... My mom loves that show! She really takes note of the places that Kris reviews and tries the ones she finds interesting...
Since she is such a big fan of ensaymada, she wanted to try what was featured... I think she mentioned that there were several shops shown as the search for Manila's best ensaymada commenced...
Anyway, focus!128513
We did have brunch, but on to the ensaymada... Lo and behold- she didn't fancy it as much as Kris! Mind you,it was kinda big! She got the plain one (no ube), very buttery and cheesy! But I think she prefers Hizon's...
Aww, she was kind of disappointed128532
I think that's the third time Kris has failed her... She didn't like Twist so much either...128532

Stop failing us Kris!128561

You make me feel like, i've been locked out of heaven. - Bruno Mars

And that's exactly how i feel when i'm told that i can't eat spicy or sour food. Neither can i have caffeine nor juices, and i'm supposed to eat smaller and frequent meals. For now, nothing too sweet, too, to irritate the throat. Basically, i now have diet restrictions - locked outta heaven indeed!

For the last huge and full meal i am having, my mom decided to splurge and have a buffet lunch in diamond's lobby lounge. Man, i haven't been here since one of my friends celebrated her debut in the late 90's.

The food was good! I saw their japanese section and the sashimi looked fresh and tasted fresh. The chinese section was meh -but they had peking duck! Ooh, it had too much carrots in it. They also had a whole asian section with indian and malay food. I would have loved to indulge, BUT, no spicy and that means you curry!! Bummer! 128557 (merits a weeping face.) Being the carb addict i am, i found their bread selection good! Their rolls were soft and the pretzel just salty enough! Not to mention that garlic butter really went well with the bread. Mmmmmnomnomnom...

There's always room for dessert, even when the cough is bad! I just had to select something not too sweet and ended up getting the sugar free sweets. The panna cotta was lovely, a little on the dry side though. I could smell my mom's coffee and it felt weird that i couldn't have any. Again, 128557.

For 1,500, that buffet rocked! Unfortunately, i just couldn't eat the other stuff. Oh and that angry blue bird i posted judged what i ate the whole time, it's like my doctor possessed it to watch me. I'm just missing a clicking tongue sound from it.

P.S. It was the only photo i got before my batt conked out.

Whenever I think of Diamond Hotel I always go back and remember the Dessert Event they had years ago. Flash forward to today I found myself serendipitously seated in the lobby lounge for cakes and Tea with my parents

Food 127775127775127775127775
Some of the best French Style cakes and pastries in town, They're Supermoist Chocolate Cake has a very big Following especially through their Cake Club Outlets. While their Le Royale (Which I had) is a dark chocolate dream, not too sweet, with a slightly bitter kick! 128513127851And the Ceylon tea I ordered was properly brewed 128522128522. I also tried a swig of my Dad's Iced Sumibi Coffee, which tasted quite good, a little more bitter than UCC's Sumiyaki, but still good all the same.

Price 127775127775127775127775
All though not cheap by any standard, the prices were reasonable 250 for a 5x1x2 inch slice of cake made with Valrhona (Which costs about 400 pesos for a 7oz bar) Which in my opinion can serve up to 2 persons 128107 (Take note UP TO) Oh and they have 50%off on all cakes after 8pm (+points in my book 128522)

Value 127775127775127775127775 (don't need to whip out the formula for that)

Service 127775127775127775
Service was attentive and responsive, the only reason I gave a three was that there was minimal interaction with the service staff (thus no chance to really gauge the service properly) Think of it as a temporary grade 128566

Ambience 127775127775127775127775
Typical hotel lobby cafe ambience, although I felt the decor was a little outdated (personal opinion) And the armchair was a little too deep for me

Total: 127775127775127775127775

Side Note: They're also well known for their Ensaymadas, I've had them before and they're great! 128513

Good place and good food. Prices for their fruit shakes are too expensive and the tastes are not worth it.

The famous to those who LOVE ensaymada! Our very own Diamond Ensaymada! It has 2 flavors the UBE & Plain.

Most of the guest choose the UBE bcoz of its rich in flavor of the YAM itself & the perfect combi of buttercreme & Cheddar cheese on top! :)

I bet that if you'd tried it you always see yourself craving for this! Heheh! :) <3

It's a little bit of pricey for 120 each but I can say that it's worth it because of the size! It's huge! Haha!

Basta! Many are curious and tried it but in the end their CURIOUSITY was SATISFIED! :)

Truffle fries were crisp and the taste wasn't too strong to the point of umay. But, sometimes it was so faint that I could barely taste any truffle oil. The serving was huge, though!

The salmon was a bit weird for me. It was topped with what tasted like capers and some yellow wasabi? The barley risotto creeped me out. The sauce on the side tasted like liquefied ensaymada. To me, the star of the whole plate was the boiled veggie.

I didn't bother ordering their cakes because last time I visited Cake Club for dessert I was disappointed. I was able to try the Ispahan which was definitely not for my taste buds. It was good for pictures but not for eating. It was too sweet and dry. I was also able to try the Vanessa and it was another wrong choice. It tasted a little better than the Ispahan but it still wasn't too pleasing. The cake was also too sweet and dry.

As for ambience, it was very chill and I liked the interiors. It wasn't too flashy nor was it too plain. The staff were also very friendly. They aren't like those robot-perfect people in other hotels. I even heard one exclaim OMG! I like that they're real. I also liked the uniform of one girl that was a white tuxedo jacket and a black midi pencil skirt. The only downside was the number of flies that kept visiting our table.. and my sister's food.

All in all everything was just okay. Maybe I came in with too much expectations. Or I'm probably extra hard to please today cuz it's that time of month again. 128128

I've been curious about The Cake Club, having read about it left & right. We've sampled their giant macaron/cakes in Rockwell -can't say I'm a fan. I found 'em too sweet. Pretty to look at & colorful, but deathly sweet.

Today, with the 2 girls playing hooky with me, I thought of taking them to the "real" Cake Club for a ladies brunch, not its random-nook-in-the mall version. Wrong move. I should probably have taken them to BGC.

The ambience of The Cake Club in Diamond hotel is too stiff & sorry to say.. downright cold & ugly. It's more of a businessman's lobby. (and not the suit & tie type ha! The asian/foreigner kind!) Yeah, I should have taken them to BGC! :P

We ordered the Truffle fries 200php. It's ok. Not too oily. Super crunchy. <3 I couldn't taste the truffle in it though, parang regular fries lang. But maybe it's coz of my colds.

For the main dish, we got the Slow roasted Beef Belly with red rice 480 php, Roast Chicken with potatoes 450 php, and Baked Salmon with barley risotto 575 php. The choices are really few -like 4 for the main entrees. Some sandwiches, soup, salad & pasta. That's basically it. Well duh, it IS the CAKE club. :P

Omg. The taste!! <3 They more than compensated for the blah surroundings. Superb hotel quality food. Jena's chicken was a bit on the dry side though. And Jana got creeped out by the barley risotto haha. The servings were pretty ok. I initially thought they'd be hoity-tooty small. I was pleasantly surprised to see our plates filled! \m/ Maybe they should push their main meals more than their dessert? :P

And speaking of dessert, their meager cake selection in display didn't scream out to us. And that's saying a lot coz I L-O-V-E dessert. So I asked for the Peanut Butter & Chocolate Cake from Corniche instead. If I can't find happiness in their cakes, by jolly I'll have something chocolatey married with peanut butter! :P Surprise surprise.. IT WAS GOOD.. and RICHLY calorific! <3 maybe I'll just stay away from the macarons next time.

I just wish they'd take better measures of the FLY situation. Those buggers kept landing on our food. Had to send our plates back to the kitchen for replacement TWICE. @_@

For pictures head on over to sugargosice.blogspot.com under The Cake Club! :)
