If you're looking for a decent but affordable authentic Japanese place, Tonkatsu-ya is the place to be! Dinner for two costs just a little more than 500 pesos.

Ate here awhile ago and the food is superb! Yabu like breading and choice of meat (mine was hirekatsu) but for half the price! Their set meal consists of rice, miso soup and veggies. Unfortunately the rice and cabbage are not unlimited. If you want some sesame sauce to go with your cabbage, it's charged for 40pesos.

Tastes just as good as mainstream Tonkatsu places but for a lesser price. Almost all customers were Japanese, we actually felt we were the foreigners in the area. lol. I will definitely come back.

its a little authentic japanese restaurant hidden under this condo along st paul rd. staff greets you in japanese upon entry. I think I saw the owner, who Is Japanese. I ordered the popular Tonkatsu Set around 200+ php. it was very tender and delicious and placed on a bed shredded iceberg lettuce. You can taste that its fresh and prepared upon order. not reheated. set comes with iced tea (not nestea iced tea), bean sprout w/ sesame oil side dish and miso soup. ill come back for more!

Authentic and cheap! Two words that looks good together! I've only been here once and we ordered the cheese and normal katsu but it was okay! Not to bad but worth the 200 pesos. Also tried their Gyoza and to my surprise I liked it! If you're ever in St. Paul street make sure to try this hole-in-the-wall for cheap katsu ;)

This place was recommended by a friend who works nearby.

We ordered Ebi Tempura set and Hirekatsu set.

The 3-piece ebi tempura looked too pretty on a bed of shredded cabbage. They're plump and golden brown. Mukha syang croquettes compared to the regular tempura we're used to. They're meaty, juicy and flavorful.

The cheese melted beautifully on top of the hirekatsu. The pork cutlet was fried to perfection-- golden brown and crunchy, the crumbs evenly coated the cutlet and is not oily, and the meat is tender if not juicy. Tonkatsuya mastered the art of deep frying.

I asked the waitingstaff the difference between a tonkatsu and a hirekatsu. She said tonkatsu is fatty while hire is on the leaner side.

All sets include rice, miso soup, togue, and shredded cabbage for PhP300. Sweet deal!

Yay! A "Turning Japanese" badge! Arigato gozaimasu!

I read a blog from a Japanese foodie about this best value authentic tonkatsu for only P200! So I waste no time to find this place.

Located in the basement of a condominium, this small restaurant, beside a laundry shop and a beauty parlor, is like a secret place frequented by Japanese expats looking for affordable Japanese comfort food. It is owned by a Japanese and has actually been in existence for more than 6 years!

I was there for lunch on a Sunday. Apart from me is a young Japanese couple with two small kids, enjoying a leisurely lunch, while reading manga magazine. Near the counter sat the owner, looks like a retired Japanese man, immersed with his ipad, while a bevy of waitresses, who in unison greeted me "washai mashay" upon entering, stood beside him, chattering and watching ASAP on TV.

I felt I was in Japan eating in some discreet basement restaurant or canteen.

I ordered the Tonkatsu set, which comes with a piece of tonkatsu, a heap of shredded cabbage, a bowl of rice, and miso soup. Yes, for only P200!

It was served with no frills. The tonkatsu breading was lightly golden and meat was flavorful, tender and juicy. The only setback is that it had a thick layer of fat (normally, I like some fat, but this was too thick), and the cut was smaller than expected (but for P200, can't complain). Next time I will get the Hirekatsu, which is the lean cut, for an additional P20. The tonkatsu sauce was also nice, even without the pounded sesame seeds.

The shredded cabbage was also nice, but, unfortunately, didn't come with a sesame dressing (something I look forward to in a tonkatsu set). The waitress told me to just use tonkatsu sauce! Even in Japan, I don't think, this is the case. It always comes with sesame dressing! I didn't know how to eat my cabbage without the right sauce! That's one star minus. 128556

The miso soup was also nice (perfect blend), and so as the rice, soft and fluffy, even if it wasn't Japanese rice. The complimentary iced green tea was also refreshing and light. Sarap! Not bitter. I had two refills for free!

They also serve Japanese curry rice set, donburi rice bowls, tempura, gyoza, sahimi, etc. If you want cheap Japanese food and don't mind the frills, then this is the place. I would still go back just for the price and to try out the other dishes.

Refer to the Looloo map, it is easy to find. Once you are at Estrella St. from Chino Roces, turn left on St. Paul St. A big condo named Palm Tower is on your right. This restaurant is in the basement. Go on a Sunday to avoid traffic.

The place was really hard to find because it's hidden in Palm Tower at San Antonio Village. You have to have a car if you go to this Japanese haven. But it was truly worth it! One of the best Katsus i've tasted at a not so expensive price. Order the Cheese Katsu Set! So good 128525127857
