I had a love at first bite taste of Kulawo in Sulyap in San Pablo. Since then every time I visit San Pablo I make sure I order this. I've never had this dish, never even known what it was until that visit. It was also the first time I've ever eaten a banana heart. I used to ignore it when I saw it in my Lola's kare-kare. Malay ko ba.
Spending a weekend with my girls in Liliw, we spotted this "Kulao" house along the main road. Screamed with excitement and pivoted our car to get us this awesome dish.
50 pesos. Wow. 50 pesos per order. We got 2 to go.
While I've only tried Sulyap's version, for 50 pesos it was definitely delicious. It had a touch of coconut milk at vinegar. The slices of banana heart were bigger here too. This was a great veggie side that went well with our order of crispy sisig from Mang Pabling's just down the street.
Sulyap still has the better version for me. It's creamy and roasted, plus I like the thinly sliced banana better. Aaand, it didn't have the blackish parts this one had.
When in Liliw and looking for local food, this is a great option. This and Mang Pablings ️
